Expeditions

Tawd Vale Adventure Centre is ideally placed to be used for practice and full bronze and silver Duke of Edinburgh expeditions.

Our Facilities

The centre is equipped with a range of camping spaces that are suitable for small teams to much larger groups. Each campsite offers access to water standpipes and toilet and shower facilities.

Support vehicles can be parked in our car parks or by some sites and we have indoor accommodation in the form of our bothies available for supervisors and assessors at a reasonable rate.

The Activity Barn or Old Training Hut can be hired for training purposes.

Where to go and Projects

The centre is surrounded by a network of public footpaths that allow walkers, cyclists and canoeists to explore the unique environment that West Lancashire has to offer. Within easy distance, participants can access the Leeds-Liverpool Canal, woodland, hills, arable and livestock farming and the urban environment. This offers a vast range of opportunities for projects while completing the expedition.

Accessing the Centre

While there is a public footpath close to the main entrance to the centre, we do not recommend using this as crossing and walking along the A5209 can be extremely dangerous due to fast moving vehicles, the large number of heavy goods vehicles that use this road and the fact there is no pedestrian walkway.

It is much safer to access the centre either via Tears Lane in Newburgh (where there is a pedestrian crossing over the A5209), to the corner of the site where there is an opening (Grid Reference SD 473 098), or via the track that passes Lathom Chapel, accessing the site at ‘Pearly Gates’ (Grid Reference SD 467 096). We have right of access along both of these tracks.

Other places to camp

Within a reasonable distance there are a number of other campsites that are ideally situated for the Silver expedition. These are:

Rock and River, approx 5.5 miles (GR: SD 502 161) Website

Scarisbrick Guide Campsite, approx 6.5 miles (GR: SD 387 123) Website

Bispham Hall Scout Estate, approx 7.5 miles (GR: SD 523 025) Website

If you know of any other good local sites, please do not hesitate to contact us and we will add them here.
